Yes on R Campaign Launch Party

Yes on R Campaign Could Win Millions of Dollars for Children Zero-Five-Years Old This November

WEPOWER’s early childhood development advocates and supporters, led by the Tomorrow Builder Fellows and a new cohort of Power Builders, are excited to announce the launch of the Yes on R campaign in St. Louis City. Yes on R is a chance to raise approximately $2.3 million annually for early childhood programs and services benefitting 0-5 year olds in the city’s most divested areas. Rochelle Bea, Tomorrow Builder, mother, grandmother, city resident, and the director of a Head Start and Early Head Start center in the Walnut Park East neighborhood says, “So many families and early childhood providers are struggling right now and this is a huge opportunity to invest in something that will benefit our city for generations.”

Proposition R appears on this November’s ballot in St. Louis City thanks to the unanimous Aldermanic support for Board Bill 8, passed this March and sponsored by Alderwoman Shameem Clark Hubbard. Funds would be generated through a modest increase in the Mental Health Board’s current property tax. The annual impact on homeowners would be only $11.40 for a $100,000 home. Homeowners wouldn’t see an increase on their bills until late 2021. The $2.3 million would be equitably distributed by the St. Louis Mental Health Board. A sting of recent local reports have shown a dangerous lack of public funding and access for early childhood programs and services, especially among low-income, Black, and Brown families, a public emergency dramatically worsened by the COVID pandemic. Research shows investing in quality birth-to-5 programs and services leads to significant lifelong benefits including increased academic, social-emotional, and professional and a decrease in child deaths and violent crime.

RSVP here to celebrate this opportunity at the Yes on R campaign launch party where our Early Childhood Power Builders will speak alongside Deaconess Foundation’s Director of Advocacy, Constance Rush, and Alderwoman Shameem Clark-Hubbard.
